Women and men started filtering into Bryant Park on Saturday afternoon, March 28 despite frigid temps and a light snow flurry earlier that morning – the weather was no deterrent to those who were able to make it out to WE Bike NYC’s first Women’s History Scavenger Hunt. A total of 32 riders came out to participate in the first urban scavenger hunt of its kind in Manhattan, which was designed to celebrate the contributions of women to New York City as well as to support the work of WE Bike NYC. The ride was part race and part scavenger hunt – riders were given a manifest with clues of checkpoints which they had to decipher and then take photos (extra points given for artistic creativity) at each, all leading to the finish in the Lower East Side.

About the concept behind the ride, organizer Kristina Sepúlveda stated that “the inspiration for the ride came from bopping around the city and being in awe of the history in our streets. WE thought it would be super fun to put together an event that celebrates the incredible work women have done to build and strengthen our communities. And there’s no better way to do that then by bike.”

Afterwards, WE all celebrated all of the participants and gave away some awesome stuff. Thanks to our awesome sponsors, WE gave away over $1,000 in prizes ranging from Bern bicycle helmets, Torch helmets, SWAG bags from Bike New York, Terry Bikes women’s saddles, vegan and cruelty free cosmetics from Elixery Cosmetics, a one of a kind bag designed by Mer Bags, T-shirts from Fix My Life, and a free bike tune up from Brooklyn bike shop Bicycle Roots.

WE are so pleased with how the scavenger hunt turned out — WE had a lot of fun discovering important contributions made by women across different pockets of Manhattan!! A HUGE thanks to the volunteers that made this happen, WE couldn’t have done it without you!
